MSGI added new projects to promote sustainable marine development

The Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) has expanded the scope of the Singapore Maritime Green Initiative (MSGI) project to promote sustainable marine development.

Launched in 2011, MSGI includes several project developments such as Green Ship Project (GSP), Green Port Project (GPP) and Green Technology Project (GTP).

The two new projects are the Green Awareness Project (GAP) and the Green Energy Project (GEP). Among them, GAP will focus on the exploration of sustainable transportation methods. The GEP aims to promote the use of marine clean fuels and the use of energy-saving operational measures to cater to global shipping limits.

In addition, MPA said that since the Singapore Port has long encouraged the use of LNG as a sustainable alternative fuel for ships, LNG ships have been included in the GSP program since July 1 this year.

In addition, according to the latest data, the GSP program has prompted more than 50% of eligible ships to pass the EEDI (Iron Energy Efficiency Design Index) framework required by IMO.

In addition, the sulphur oxide limit for the GPP project will be reduced to 0.5%, and ships using low-sulfur fuels (less than 0.5% sulphur) will be eligible for a 25% port fee for the entire period of the call to Newport. Similar offers will also be extended to the use of LNG. The GPP project has reduced the fuel sulphur content of more than 3,700 ships to no more than 1%.

More than 20 projects (60 ships involved) in the GTP project have also achieved different results.

This series of encouraging news prompted MPA to extend the MSGI project to December 31, 2019.

MPA CEO Andrew Tan said: "Although the current market faces severe economic challenges, we still hope that MSGI can stimulate the development of the sea industry and continue to provide safe, efficient and sustainable maritime transportation services to the industry."
