ABB delivers the world's largest HVDC transformer

July 16, 2012 - The world's largest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transformer supplied by ABB has recently been transported from Ludvika, Sweden, to Brazil's Podoweliu by rail, road, waterway and other means of transportation. Porto Velho) for the country's longest HVDC transmission line in Rio-Madeira (related video).
This time, ABB provided core equipment transformers for the Rio-Madera transmission project, writing another chapter in the field of transmission. The super transmission line spans 2,500 kilometers and connects two new hydroelectric power stations in northwestern Brazil with the country's main economic hub, St. Paul. Upon completion, the project will become the longest HVDC transmission line in the world.
The seven 600 kV large HVDC transformers provided by ABB are mainly used to regulate the current, ensuring efficient and reliable long-distance transmission. Each transformer has a net weight of about 400 tons and is the largest of its kind to date.
These transformers departed from Ludvika, Sweden, across the Atlantic Ocean and the Rio Madeira river, and eventually arrived in Puerto Verde, Brazil. This exciting journey uses a variety of modes of transportation such as rail, land and waterways, all the way across the ocean, through cities and villages, and every day of the day requires careful planning and logistics.
Starting from Ludvika, Sweden, these transformers were transported by rail to the port of Oxelösund, Sweden, and then loaded onto an ocean-going ship to Manaus, Brazil. This trip took a total of 20 days.
Upon arrival in Manaus, the transformer was carefully placed on top of the barge and transported via the Madeira River to Porto Velho. Considering the weight of the transformer, the barge needs to flow at least 7 meters deep, and usually only the rainy season can ensure this navigation condition.

It is 20 km from Porto Velho to the final destination. During this last journey, all the transformers were placed on a giant cargo trailer, and under the traction of five trucks, carefully proceed along the existing roads and specially prepared tested sections. Eventually, all transformers arrived at the substation and were ready to begin installation.
The entire project once again proves that ABB is able to cope with the most difficult challenges in the engineering field and has the strength to develop, design and deliver the best technology to the world.
